The .beta.-adrenergic receptor antagonist, hydroxybenzylpindolol predominantly interacted with a single receptor subtype on these cells. Hofstee analysis of zinterol competition curves with membranes from adult rat cerebral cortex were nonlinear, suggesting the presence of 2 binding components. The data are consistent with the conclusion that mainly a single subtype of .beta.-adrenergic receptor exists on astroglia cultured from newborn rat cerebral cortex and that this receptor is of the .beta.1-subtype.
