A survey of dermatophytoses and tinea versicolor among senior high school students in southern Taiwan

In this survey approx. 33% of the boys and 20% of the girls were found to have dermatomycoses and approx. 10% of boys and 1% of the girls had tinea versicolor [Malassezia furfur]. Students from a rural school had a higher rate of infection than those from an urban school. Dermatophytes were isolated in 30-40% of cases, including 247 Trichophyton rubrum, 127 T. mentagrophytes and 64 Epidermophyton floccosum. Male students showed a prevalence of tinea cruris and corporis, while girls showed a predominant infection rate for tinea pedis. Tinea cruris and tinea versicolor were prevalent among male sports players.
