Patients (129) with syncope were admitted to an acute medical department during 2 yr. Their case reports were reexamined regarding diagnostic procedures and final diagnosis, and 82 patients answered a follow-up questionnaire. Of the patients 25% had new attacks, some requiring rehospitalization. In the discussion the literature is reviewed and it was concluded that the case history is the most valuable guide to a correct etiological diagnosis obtained by simple means such as EEG and ECG.
