Endurance, based on the ratio of running speed to cardiac frequency, over 30 to 35 km was estimated in 6 marathon runners, 19 to 44 years old, before and after they were given a diet with normal energy and protein, high in lipids and low in carbohydrates for 3 days then a diet low in lipids and high in carbohydrates for 3 days. Endurance improved in 3, was unchanged in 2 and worsened in 1. It is suggested that runners should determine personal reactions to a carbohydrate loading diet before using it to improve performance.
