Bacteria and fungi from 140 children suffering diaper dermatitis were investigated. Microscopic examination and cultures on Sabouraud agar, blood agar, S-110 medium, mannitol agar and eosin-methylene blue agar were done. Candida was isolated in 96 samples (65.7%), but only in 76 was it considered a pathogen, based on the number of cells observed microscopically and colonies. C. albicans and C. tropicalis were the most frequently isolated species. Staphylococcus epidermidis (19.2%), non-hemolytic Streptococcus (18.5%), Staphylococcus aureus (16.5%) and .beta.-hemolytic Streptococcus (12.8% were also isolated. In 49 cases, Candida was isolated in pure culture; Candida associated with .beta.-hemolytic streptococci (6 cases) or Staphylococcus aureus was observed in 8 and 2 cases, respectively.
