The effect of BCG stimulation of the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS) on DNA synthesis and mitotic activity of regenerating liver hepatocytes was studied in female Wistar rats. BCG enhanced hepatocyte proliferation, which was manifested in a more synchronous synthesis of DNA and hepatocyte mitosis. The stimulant effect of BCG is accounted for by functional reconstruction of the MPS, particularly in liver macrophages.
