Ivermectin has been used for the treatment of cats with ear mites. Parenteral or oral administration of ivermectin products can result in toxicosis in kittens, which may be fatal. Although the exact mechanism for ivermectin neurotoxicity is unknown, acute onset of ivermectin toxicosis has been attributed to the effects of ivermectin in the CNS. Reports of ivermectin toxicosis usually involve kittens. Signs of toxicosis usually develop within 1 to 12 hours after administration of the drug, and include abnormal behavior, ataxia, lethargy, weakness, recumbency, apparent blindness, coma, and death.
