Acute myocardial infarction was observed in 5 neonates whose ages ranged from 1 to 9 days. The involvement was biventricular in 3 of them. All were associated with complications in the antenatal period or during delivery. There were no congenital cardiac abnormalities in 4 cases; one had a small ventricular septal defect. Blood vessels including the coronary arteries were normal in all cases. Infarction in the heart was accompanied by similar acute infarcts in various other organs in 3 cases. Possible factors leading to myocardial infarction in the neonate include perinatal sepsis, prematurity and hypoxia.
