Serious complications after open heart surgery

Of 1227 open heart cases were performed from April, 1978 to March, 1981, 163 had significant complications during postoperative period. Among these cases, 53 patients died from serious postoperative complications, and 110 survival cases stayed in the ICU more than 7 days. These significant complications were analyzed further. The complications were classified into 6 major causes. Heart failure (HF) was found in 156 cases (95.7%), arrhythmia in 74 cases (45.4%), respiratory failure in 72 cases (44.2%), infection in 53 cases (32.5%), CNS disturbance in 31 cases (19.0%) and renal failure in 22 cases (13.5%). In 52 patients with HF who died, 24 cases died mainly from low cardiac output syndrome and 28 cases were associated with other complications. Beside HF, sepsis and renal failure were also severe complications. In 17 cases sepsis was a complication, and the mortality rate was 47.1%. The highest mortality rate (90.9%) occurred in patients with renal failure.
