The management of solid wastes is a multidisciplinary science that is highly complex in view of the interrleations between waste problems and ecology, resources, energy, economic policy, legislation, and administration. This study briefly points out some of these interrelations. Many of the problems touched on have gone unrecognized until very recently. No generally applicable universal solutions are suggested inasmuch as each problem calls for a specific one. Unless the attitudes and behavior of the populations concerned are taken into account, it will be impossible to take effective steps regarding the management of solid wastes. The task must include proper mass education.
