Oestrogen therapy without stilbenes

In July 1981 the European Commission Directive 81/602/EEC prohibited the marketing of stilbene products (i.e. stillboestrol, hexoestrol, dienoestrol and benzestrol), for use in animals. The current situation is reviewed and alternative products are suggested for oestrus induction, oestrogen-priming and (in small animals) treatment of misalliance, false pregnancy, hypogonadal obesity, urinary incontinence, prostatic hypertrophy and excess libido in the male dog.
