Note on differentiation of the relationship of perivascular glia cells and capillaries in rat cerebral cortex

The perivascular zone of the cerebral cortex in rats aged 1-6 days react to injection directly and specifically by a phagocytic reaction on the part of microglia-type cells, edema and proliferation of filamentous structures etc. in the astroblasts and by a tissue reaction characterized by faster maturation of the cellular elements, some of which subsequently undergo cell death. In the late phase, degenerative changes and progressive destruction of the glial elements can be observed, together with gross changes in the myelin and structural changes in the capillary basement membrane. Phagocytic activity is evidently intensified by a new generation of cells of a microglial character, while the immunological component of healing is reinforced by the presence of plasmacytes.
