There were 452 school children from 3 different schools of Lucknow City (India) studied for any evidence of .beta.-hemolytic streptococcal throat infection. The overall rate of streptococcal throat infection was 15.5%; this rate was only 7.9% in apparently healthy children. Though the infection was seen more in males (16.1%), it was not much different from female children (14.4%). The oropharyngeal conditions (tonsillitis and pharyngitis) were found more commonly associated with positive cultures as compared to conditions like sore throats. The most common antigenic group encountered was G (50.0%), followed by group A (34.3%), B (7.1%) and C (4.3%). The group G strains were mainly found with healthy carriers, group A strains were more often seen with conditions like tonsillitis and pharyngitis.
