Reports have appeared in the literature of abnormal Cu metabolism in pigmentary retinopathies based on the fact that there is a correlation between Cu and pigment formation. Recently, important advances have been made in the understanding of human Cu metabolism. It was discovered that Cu plays a role in melanin formation and is correlated with pigment formation. Because high myopia is connected with changes in the retinal pigment epithelium, the Cu metabolism in patients with high myopia was investigated. Since the results of the values of Cu metabolism in retinitis pigmentosa patients are contradictory, the findings in these patients were included in this study.
