Ventilation-perfusion (.ovrhdot.VA/.ovrhdot.Q) distribution in the lung was measured in 12 normal mongrel dogs using Wagner's 6 inert gas elimination method. Some difficulties were found in collection of expired gas and in detection of inert gases, especially ethane and halothane by gas chromatography. Wagner's original procedures and the computer program were modified. The .ovrhdot.VA/.ovrhdot.Q distribution observed in normal lungs was logarithmically normal. The average dispersion estimated by the mean log SD was 0.544 for ventilation distribution and 0.481 for blood flow distribution. The .ovrhdot.VA/.ovrhdot.Q at the mean of the ventilation distribution averaged 1.014; that at the mean blood flow was 0.752. Intrapulmonary shunting was found in 4 cases 15.23% and the intrapulmonary shunting 0.43% were due to the effect of some .ovrhdot.VA/.ovrhdot.Q imbalance even in the normal lung.
