Prostaglandin synthetase inhibiting drugs have been clinically shown to reduce the bleeding induced by the intrauterine devices. A prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor, mefenamic acid was entrapped in triacetate polymer threads. These threads when introduced into the rat uterine horns demonstrated an anti-implantation activity. The drug was released in the rat uterus as indicated by the chemical assay of the drug content in the threads which were left in the rat uterus for 2 wk. Medicated threads caused less inflammation as compared to the non-medicated threads.
