Ureteroileocutaneous anastomosis--the Lagos experience

Ten cases of ureteroileocutaneous anastomosis performed at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) between Jan. 1969-Dec. 1978, were reviewed. Vesicovaginal fistula was the most common indication for surgery. Wound infection and stomal stenosis were common as early and later postoperative complications, respectively. Acceptability to the patient and late presentation in bladder cancer cases are the main contributory factors to the underuse of this procedure. Ureterosigmoidostomy, as the procedure of choice, is recommended.
