Rotavirus infection in Thai people: a preliminary study

Preliminary epidemiological study of rotavirus infection in the Thai people was performed by determining rotavirus antibodies in sera from individuals of various age groups and demonstrating rotavirus particles in diarrheic stools by EM. Rotavirus complement-fixing antibodies screened at 1:8 dilution were found in 15% of children aged < 6 mo. Incidence of infection increased with age and reached a peak (70%) at the age group of 1-5 yr; after that the frequency of positive antibodies was maintained in all age groups observed. By EM, 44% of diarrheic stools from children aged < 1 yr showed positive rotavirus particles. An increased frequency of rotavirus infection in the cold season was not observed.
