Laser angioplasty is a highly sophisticated and one of the newest among modalities for interventional cardiology. The term LASER is derived as an acronym of light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, the principle of which was first developed by Schawlow and Townes in 1958. It is a unique radiation consisting of a sharp beam of coherent and monochromatic light capable of vaporising tissue and materials of high resistance. Maiman demonstrated the first operative laser, based on ruby crystal in 1960. Although the scenario of laser angioplasty is fast changing one important consideration has not yet been worked out is, the cost benefit ratio. The enormous cost of the device is self-restrictive in its liberal use. One would like to look forward to a situation when such costly modality could be justified because of its unparalleled superiority; but such situation has not emerged clearly.
