Committed hemopoietic precursors in peripheral blood from patients with aplastic anemia

Granulocytic hemopoietic precursors (CFU-C) and erythrocytic hemopoietic precursors (BFU-E) were investigated in the peripheral blood from 19 patients with aplastic anemia. The concentrations of both hemopoietic precursors were significantly decreased in all patients with aplastic anemia. Six of 8 patients who received transfusions had no circulating hemopoietic precursors. Two of the patients without any circulating precursors were dead within 4 mo. after the investigation. Five of 6 patients who received no transfusions had both precursors in their blood. The only BFU-E were detected in the blood from the other patient. Both CFU-C and BFU-E were detected in all blood samples from the patients who already recovered from aplasia and maintained moderate cell counts in each series in blood without transfusion for more than 6 mo. The concentration of circulating hemopoietic precursors apparently is closely correlated with hemopoiesis in vivo in the patients with aplastic anemia.
