The role of lipoperoxide on cataract formation was studied. Blood and lens lipoperoxide content in 95 cataract patients (55 whole lens and 40 nucleus) and lens lipoperoxide content in hereditary cataract mice were measured by Yagi's method. In cataract patients, blood lipoperoxide content showed no difference when compared with the control group; there was a significant correlation with nuclear lipoperoxide content (P < 0.02). Whole lens lipoperoxide content was significantly higher than nuclear lipoperoxide content (P < 0.05). Nuclear lipoperoxide content showed no difference among the opacified nucleus group and the clear nucleus group. Whole lens lipoperoxide content increased as the cataract developed; it decreased after its maturity. In hereditary cataract mice, whole lens lipoperoxide content increased as the cataract developed; it showed no difference compared with the normal mice. The role of lipoperoxide on cataract formation was suggested in cataract patients; its role in hereditary cataract formation could not be determined.
