Coffee and tea consumption and breast disease

The relation of coffee and tea consumption to fibrocystic disease of the breast and to breast cancer was studied in 451 women hospitalized for these diseases and interviewed since 1972. A modest, positive association between hot beverage consumption and both diseases was found. There was no apparent dose-response effect. These data add little support to the hypothesis that methylxanthine consumption plays an etiologic role in the development of fibrocystic or malignant disease of the breast.
