In the majority of cases the histogenesis and classification of tumors can be unequivocally established by light microscopy but in some instances the diagnosis remains ambiguous even after special staining techniques have been employed. The manner of resolving diagnostic problems with EM is described. This includes distinguishing an anaplastic carcinoma from a sarcoma, an amelanotic melanoma from other tumors, APUDomas from other tumors, myosarcomas from other tumors and Ewing's tumor, neuroblastoma and lymphoma from each other.
