Placental blood flow can be determined indirectly using either the infusion method with labelled albumin or transferrin, or the 133Xe clearance method. Data on maternal placental blood flow in relation to maternal placental volume can be obtained by applying the infusion method. Total placental blood flow in relation to placental volume is determined by the 133Xe method. With this technique, the actual placental blood flow is underestimated by about 20-30% due to recirculation of 133Xe through the fetus into the placenta.
