Failure at primary and regional sites following combined treatment in advanced head and neck cancer

Results of surgery or radiotherapy alone in treatment of advanced cancers of the head and neck are far from satisfactory because of high rate of neck recurrences. Present study notes the neck failures following a planned combined theapy of irradiation and surgery in eighty of such cases. Seven per cent of the determinate patients (excluding those lost to follow up) and fifty percent of the absolute group (including those lost to follow up) are surviving disease-free during 18-36 months of follow up. There appears to be reduction in the failure rate both at the primary and regional sites following combined therapy. However, it remains to be seen it there is actually translated into long term results (5 years cure rates).
