Occurrence of cancer of the uterine stump. a follow-up examination of patients submitted to supravaginal hysterectomy

A total of 73 patients submitted to supravaginal hysterectomy during the period of 1962-1970 were invited to follow-up investigation at least 9 yr after operation. Fifty-four patients were examined; none of the smears showed atypical cells. In 2 of the patients, stump carcinoma had developed previously; both of these were in stage II at the time of diagnosis. In 8 patients, the cervical stump had been removed for one reason or another. A total of 30.8% of the patients who were offered prophylactic investigation in the regional screening program accepted this offer as compared with 88% of the normal population. In 21.1%, prophylactic investigations were carried out via other channels. Prophylactic investigations are apparently essential in patients after supravaginal hysterectomy.
