Biliverdin enhanced 3H-thymidine incorporation in liver cells in culture. The stimulatory effect produced by biliverdin decreased while, at the same time, spontaneous neoplastic transformation occurred in the liver cells. An hepatoma cell strain established in the laboratory (LF hepatoma) did not respond to biliverdin. The significance of this stimulation is discussed.
