In a study of serum samples from 1719 pigs, 3 Tf types were identified (AA, AB and BB), with frequencies of 15.0, 44.7 and 40.3% resp. The frequencies of TfA and TfB were 0.374 and 0.626 resp. In a study of 420 pigs, the only ceruloplasmin (Cp) type found was BB. At 4 and 6 months of age, pigs of the Tf AA type had significantly higher Cp activity and serum copper level than pigs of Tf type BB. The h2s of Cp activity, copper and iron concentrations and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) of blood were 0.33, 0.55, 0.12 and 0.25 resp. In a study of 47 gilts slaughtered at 87 kg live weight, no relationships were found between TIBC at 4 and 6 months of age and meat yield or fattening performance, although TIBC at 6 months was significantly correlated with age at slaughter (-0.58). In a group of 53 gilts + barrows slaughtered at 214 days of age, Cp activity at 6 months was significantly correlated with weight of lean in the ham without shank (-0.39), loin-eye area (-0.30), daily gain from 3 to 7 months (-0.26), and food conversion efficiency from 3 to 7 months (0.30).
