The swine provides an excellent surgical model for intrarenal surgery. A safe method of anesthesia and a practical surgical approach is described, as done in 16 renal units with slush regional hypothermia. Histologic and scanning electron microscopic analyses of the intrarenal morphology show the similarities of the swine to the human kidney. Corrosion casts of the swine intrarenal vasculature illustrate constant cephalad and caudad primary renal divisions with a transverse intrasegmental plane.
