Ossification in abdominal scars following laparotomy

Two cases of heterotopic ossification within the rectus sheath in patients who had had previous laparotomies are described. This is an unusual complication, which can usually be diagnosed by the clinical findings and lateral radiographs. In these patients heterotopic ossification should be considered in the differential diagnosis of abdominal masses. In the present cases the condition caused no discomfort and was diagnosed peroperatively.
