The interference of routine serum analysis by concomitant hemolysis was examined using blood samples obtained from 3-mo-old male Wistar/JLC rats. Additions of hemolysates to sera in concentrations from 0.13-1.32 g/dl of Hb caused changes in a number of biochemical values: increase in uric acid, creatinine, total protein, albumin, total bilirubin, nonesterified fatty acid, free cholesterol, K+, Pi Mg2+and of the activities of glutamate oxalacetate transaminase, glutamate pyruvate transaminase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), malate dehyrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, .alpha.-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, aldolase and isocitrate dehydrogenase; and a decrease in the activity of leucine aminopeptidase.
