What began as a program to provide for the nutritional and social needs of older Americans has evolved into a comprehensive health support system revolving around the congregate or home-delivered meal plan. The 1978 amendments to the Older Americans Act consolidate the social services, multipurpose senior centers, and nutrition programs under Title III with the intent of strengthening resources and coordinating these programs. The Administration on Aging is encouraging involvement of other federal agencies, public and private organizations, and individuals through advisory councils, volunteer support, and a White House Conference on Aging. The Administration is also involved in the coordination of existing and proposed projects, such as a congregate housing services program for the elderly and handicapped, housing and services for rural elderly, health and social services, peer counseling in nutrition education, and research on food delivery systems.
