Immune cytopenias in chronic active hepatitis

On examining 95 patients with chronic active hepatitis, an anemia was relieved in 53 (55.8%), a leukopenia in 62 (65.3%), a thrombocytopenia in 53 (55.8%) and a pancytopenia in 24 patients (25.3%). The use of Coombs' direct test, the aggregate-hemagglutination test and Dixon's method enabled the detection of antibodies to red blood cells in 70.5% and to platelets in 75% of the cases. This points to the existence of an immune link in the pathogenesis of the cytopenias due to chronic active hepatitis.
