Model experiments were conducted in dogs in an attempt to simulate balloon catheterization of human cerebral blood vessels. Balloon catheters suitable for temporary occlusion of blood vessels, superselective angiography and for therapeutic vascular occlusion were developed. The advantages and disadvantages of the catheters and balloons used are described. The present hemodynamic observations may serve as a basis for practical conclusions concerning similar procedures in man.
