Histamine and serotonin levels in patients with biliary tract diseases before and after surgery

The content of histamine and serotonin was studied in the blood of patients with disorders of the biliary system before and at varying times after surgery. The initial increase in the level of histamine and serotonin was revealed, as well as a general tendency of these indices to decrease and to normalize by 14 days after surgery. The level of serotonin in patients with acute destructive cholecystitis and obstructive jaundice, however, did not reach the control values by this time; which is attributed to more severe functional disturbances in the liver and other organs participating in the metabolism of the biologically active substances. In order to improve the postoperative course, it is recommended that agents conducive to a decrease in the blood serotonin level should be included in the combined intensive therapy.
