A group of 18 subjects (healthy males, aged 18-35 yr) who changed their sleep period from night to day for a week and 2 volunteers who had 2 wk of night-shift work were studied. They were investigated psychologically and by 2 electro-polygraphical recordings. During the first 2 or 3 days after the change of working program, all the subjects showed fatigue, loss of appetite, attention and memory disorders, but all these improved towards the end of the week. The comparison of the 2 polygrams, made at the beginning and the end of the week, showed 5 groups of sleep disorders. All the subjects working during the night displayed severe sleep disorders in the first 2-4 days, a fact directly affecting their work capacity; towards the end of the week sleep gradually improved by the increase of slow wave sleep and paradoxical sleep phases and by normal adjustment of sleep phases succession.
