Behavioral treatment of fear in a child with cerebral palsy using a flooding procedure

A 2 yr, 4 mo. old cerebral-palsied boy, with a severe fear of physical insecurity, was treated using an in vivo behavioral flooding/extinction technique implemented by the child's mother. After 5 flooding sessions, the extreme distress noted during baseline was no longer observed. Follow-up data revealed that gains were not only maintained at 6 mo. but also that responses to handling physical therapy had become more positive. Evidence of generalization effects and the advantages of a flooding procedure are discussed.
