Neurotoxicity in relation to tropical peripheral neuropathy: a re-appraisal

The literature on neurotoxicity in relation to tropical peripheral neuropathy is reviewed. Although the condition has well-recognized clinical features, the aetiology seems to be multifactorial. It is postulated that the condition is caused by several neurotoxins acting separately. The likelihood of developing the disease probably depends on individual genetic susceptibility and adverse environmental factors which include malnutrition and infections. It is suggested that any endemic and sporadic cases of the syndrome be fully documented clinically with special reference to dietary habits and contents, social environment and occupation. Reliance on that simple method may be profitable and supplement later biochemical and neurophysiological research.
