Treatment of cystic acne with 13 cis retinoic acid

Six patients with cystic acne were treated with 13 cis retinoic acid. The average dose was about 0.8 mg/kg/day. At the end of three months, the average reduction of the number of cysts was 78.7 per cent in four patients. The other two patients had severe side effects. The number of cysts was reduced to 86.4 per cent in one patient and 88.9 per cent in the other after decreased dosage of 0.4 mg/kg/day and 0.2 mg/kg/day respectively. The unusual side effects of fever and enlargement of lymphglands were observed. The clinical response was as good in full dose of 13 cis retinoic acid (0.4 mg/kg/day) as in half dose combined with sunlight (0.2 mg/kg/day).
