Since autoimmune hemolysis is potentially dangerous to both mother and fetus, detection of it should prompt a search for underlying systemic autoimmune disease, neoplasm or infection. The severity of maternal anemia and the time of appearance of antibodies do not necessarily correlate with neonatal outcome. Management should include identification of the antibody by class and specificity, serial indexes of maternal hemolysis, amniocentesis and ultrasonographic examinations.
