Peripheral circulation was studied before and after splenectomy in 96 patients, 56 of whom had extrahepatic portal hypertension (EHPH) and 40 had intrahepatic portal hypertension (IHPH). Various hematological indices (erythrocyte, leukocyte and thrombocyte counts) were determined. Splenoportography, liver scanning with 198Au, radioisotopic hematography and various biochemical tests were used. A high frequency of cytopenia was shown in patients with IHPH and in those with EHPH. Preoperative morphological studies of the bone marrow were recommended in doubtful cases in order to avoid diagnostic mistakes.
