Parasitic uveitis in Quebec

Between May 1977 and June 1979, serological tests were performed on 188 patients with uveitis by 10 local ophthalmological teams in the Montreal area of Canada. 43.3% had IgG antibodies to Toxoplasma, including 14 of the 43 children (average age 9 years); no IgM antibodies were detected. 7 of 43 children were clinically suspected of having toxocariasis: 2 had antibodies against Toxocara compared with 3 of the 36 non-suspected children. 5 of 80 adults had suspected ocular toxocariasis: 2 had antibodies to Toxocara compared with 2 of the 75 non-suspected adults. The study confirms the importance of toxoplasmosis in the aetiology of chorioretinitis, and indicates that the presence of clinical signs suggestive of ocular toxocariasis is correlated with seropositivity to T. canis.
