Healthy and appropriate-for-date newborn infants (49) with gestational age ranging from 26-40 wk were studied at 24-49 h of age to evaluate the renal functions at different gestational ages. Glomerular function was assessed by creatinine clearance and tubular function by fractional Na excretion (Fe, Na). The creatinine clearance (ml/min per 1.73 m2) in term infants (21.47 .+-. 5.24) was significantly higher (P < 0.001), as compared to preterm infants (11.72 .+-. 4.51) and was directly related to gestational age. The values of fractional Na excretion in term infants (0.088 .+-. 0.023) were significantly low (P < 0.001) as compared to preterm infants (0.537 .+-. 0.321) and were inversely related to gestational age. Increase in weight had no effect on creatinine clearance and tubular Na handling at any fixed gestational age.
