Spontaneous preoperative rupture and/or performation of an adjacent organ by a benign cystic teratoma is rare. Between 1952-1979 there were 4 such cases at The Johns Hopkins Hospital [Baltimore, Maryland, USA]. Incidence, etiology and pathology of this complication are discussed.
