Complement fixation tests in systemic candidiasis

Preliminary Candida complement fixation tests with rabbit hyperimmune sera showed that heat killed yeast and mycelial candidial antigenic extracts gave better results than other types of antigens. Complement fixation test with human sera were carried out on 4 groups of patients (noncandidial systemic infections, superficial candidiasis, normal healthy persons and systemic candidiasis). The former 3 groups of cases were taken as controls. In the control groups of cases, the complement fixation test was negative. In test group cases the complement fixation test was positive with a titer of 1:5 or more. Two tube difference (4-fold rise) in complement fixation titer was observed with 2nd sample of serum in all systemic candidiasis cases when mycelial antigen was used; yeast antigen gave only a 2-fold rise in titer only in 8 cases. Thus, mycelial antigen is better for the determination of complement fixation titer than yeast antigen.
