Studies were performed on effects of large doses of fentanyl on the cardiovascular system in man, using a Swan-Ganz catheter. The repeated i.v. injection of fentanyl (0.0025 mg/kg .times. 3) decreased heart rate (HR), cardiac output (CO) and mean arterial pressure (AP) but increased total peripheral resistance (TPR) and central venous pressure (CVP) and prolonged pre-ejection period. Mean pulmonary pressure mean pulmonary wedge pressure, pulmonary vascular resistance and stroke volume were unchanged with injection of fentanyl. Fentanyl may induce systemic vasoconstriction and depress the cardiac function slightly. Thus, fentanyl should be administered carefully in a patient with severe heart disease.
