Extracapsular technic for stabilization of anterior tibial motility (Harrison)

The technique described consists of insertion of sutures on the lateral aspect of the stifle joint and creation of an aponeurotic sling to reduce the head of the tibia into a posterior position. The technique has been used in 217 cases during 4.5 years, in 188 dogs with spontaneous rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament. The first 100 cases are discussed. All were observed for 3 months after surgery, some for the whole 4.5 years. In the 100 cases rupture was unilateral in 86 and bilateral in 7. Partial meniscectomy was used in 29 cases. Results of surgery were excellent in 73, good in 21 and unsuccessful in 6. Lack of success was attributed to infection of suture material, other joint disorders and previous rupture.
