Importance of gastrin, cyclic nucleotides and calcium in regulating digestive tract functions in salmonellosis

There were 220 salmonellosis patients studied. Distrubed functions of the stomach and small intestine were noted. A predominant decrease in acid-secreting and pepsin-forming gastric capacity was evident. A frequent increase in the blood plasma gastrin level of salmonellosis patients indicated that there are essential changes in the intracellular mechanism of regulation of acid secretion and pepsinogen synthesis. Significant water-electrolyte disorders were closely connected with changes in secretory function of the large intestine. Gastrin, cyclic nucleotides and Ca participate in the mechanism of secretory disorders of the small intestine, especially in changes of water-electrolyte transport, that underlie the development of the diarrhea syndrome. Methods of rational therapy of salmonellosis patients were discussed.
