Hemoccult and experimental intestinal tumours

Detection of intestinal bleeding by repeated Hemoccult tests was carried out in 18 rats and 18 mice treated by the carcinogenic drug 1,2-dimethylhydrazine and in control animals and the results compared with pathological findings after sacrifice of the animals. The test is always negative in animals without intestinal tumors, but is also negative in a high percentage of animals with intestinal polyps or carcinoma. Though the specificity index was good (100%), sensitivity was rather poor (50% in rat, 69% in mice).
