The author comments on Zn-binding ligands in human milk ultrafiltrate, identified as picolinate by Evans & Johnson [DSA 44, 1775] and as citrate by Lonnerdal et al. [DSA 44, 1774]. Concn. of ions in milk ultrafiltrate from a woman in 6th wk of lactation are tabulated, and ionic equilibria are calculated as described in DSA 43, 7816, using Evans & Johnson's value of 0.3 mM for picolinate concn. in human milk. Results indicate that Zn will be bound by both citrate and picolinate though mainly by the latter. The author notes that differences in Zn binding to caseins may cause differences between human and cows' milk in distribution of Zn on ultrafiltration.
